the plots of spring

the flowers of springtime
bloom with superstition -

daisies disclose the truth
of love or love me not

seeds left on the dandelion
number the children to come

clover fields are rummaged
for their four-leafed tokens

one’s troubles are dismissed
by wearing lilies or poppies

crocus pull their petals ‘round
as a portent of impending rain

foxgloves are left in fixity
lest one offend the fairies -

all for the fashion of meaning
and a belief in a plot to sustain us
